A morning at the salon or a care of self activity

Morning at the salon anyone?
Well, if you don't have the time to go and lounge in a beauty parlor for hours to get all made up, can I suggest a very quick and effective care of self activity instead?

Since X is more and more self conscious (mostly about his hair lately, I do not know where this comes from), and really makes efforts to have a tidy look before going out (ok, not always!), I thought about setting this activity together. I noticed that he didn't know what to use when and what was the purpose of all of these combs and brushes. (and he just loves using the hairblower, so that was an added bonus, and I wanted him to learn to use it safely). SO when he saw that tray, he was extatic (curiously)

I presented each item, and showed them when to use each one of them (comb for wet hair, hard brush for detangling, and the boar brush for finishing). They also practice to clean the brushes from all the hair that stays in there after being used. They also got out the barrettes and elastic for the benefit of my DD, and so she had a turn at practicing to put those on (she'll be needed them soon)
And well, this lead to a complete pretend play activity of being at the hairdresser complete with ever the hairdresser gown (made from a baby sling hagning at the back of E's door) , and of course, I was selected to be the customer...

WHile all of this happened, E managed to find purposeful work with what was out... (he never cease to amaze me! The nature of the child really is to build themselves!)
He got in a long activity of transfering all the barrettes and elastics from one container to another.

while I was spending my day at the pretend salon (aka E's room)

Now here is the result after more then an hour (!!) of work:

  3. Great idea for a self-care tray! I featured your post and top photo in my Montessori-Inspired Activities for Care of Self at http://livingmontessorinow.com/2012/04/10/montessori-inspired-activities-for-care-of-self/
